On July 4th, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released a statement declaring El Nio's return to the tropical Pacific after a seven-year absence.
There is a 90% chance that the El Nio event will persist into the second half of 2023, according to a recent analysis by the WMO.
According to Petteri Taalas, the Secretary-General of the WMO, "the occurrence of the El Nio phenomenon will significantly increase the likelihood of temperature records being broken and trigger more extreme heat in many parts of the world and oceans."
